Virginia Giuffre’s Epstein Testimony: A Key Account in the Scandal

Virginia Giuffre, formerly Virginia Roberts, emerged as one of the most prominent survivors and accusers in the Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking scandal. Her detailed court testimonies, particularly in depositions and filings related to her 2015 defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, provided a harrowing firsthand account of alleged grooming, abuse, and trafficking by Epstein and his associates.

Giuffre claimed that in the summer of 2000, at age 16, she worked as a locker room attendant at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. While reading a massage therapy book, she was approached by Maxwell, who offered her a job as a traveling masseuse for Epstein. Giuffre alleged this quickly turned into sexual exploitation. In her testimony, she described her first encounter at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion, where Maxwell allegedly instructed her on how to perform a massage that escalated into sexual activity involving all three.

Over the following years, from approximately 1999 to 2002, Giuffre said she was trafficked across Epstein’s properties in New York, New Mexico, Palm Beach, the U.S. Virgin Islands (Little St. James), and Paris. She testified that her role involved providing sexual services to Epstein and being “lent out” to his powerful associates. In court documents, she named several high-profile individuals she was allegedly directed to have sex with, including Prince Andrew, hedge fund manager Glenn Dubin, politician Bill Richardson, modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, and others. Epstein reportedly paid her for some encounters.

One of the most publicized elements of her testimony involved Prince Andrew. Giuffre alleged three sexual encounters, including one in London in 2001 when she was 17. She described a night at Maxwell’s home, followed by dancing at Tramp nightclub, and a subsequent encounter at Epstein’s New York mansion. A photograph showing Giuffre with Prince Andrew and Maxwell, taken by Epstein, became central evidence. Prince Andrew has consistently denied the allegations, and the two settled a civil lawsuit in 2022 for an undisclosed sum, with Andrew making no admission of guilt.

In her 2016 deposition for the Giuffre v. Maxwell case (unsealed in later years), Giuffre provided specifics about the operation. She described being trained in sexual acts, traveling on Epstein’s private jet (the “Lolita Express”), and witnessing underage girls being recruited. She portrayed Epstein and Maxwell as operating a systematic trafficking ring, with Maxwell acting as a procurer who normalized the abuse. Giuffre also recounted specific details, such as Epstein’s daily demand for sexual activity and the awareness of staff and associates.

Giuffre’s accounts faced challenges. Maxwell called her a liar in her own deposition. Giuffre later withdrew an accusation against Alan Dershowitz, acknowledging a possible misidentification. Critics questioned aspects of her timeline and memory, but supporters highlighted consistencies across multiple statements, corroborated by flight logs, photos, and other witnesses like Johanna Sjoberg.

Her testimony played a pivotal role in keeping the Epstein case in the public eye. It contributed to the unsealing of thousands of documents in 2019 and 2024, Maxwell’s 2021 conviction on sex-trafficking charges, and broader scrutiny of elite networks. Giuffre became an advocate for trafficking survivors, authoring a posthumous memoir detailing her experiences before her death in 2025.

While Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial, Giuffre’s courage in testifying helped expose systemic failures in protecting minors and holding the powerful accountable. Her story remains a cornerstone of understanding the Epstein scandal’s vast reach.
