Salma Hayek’s Producer Journey with Ventanarosa Productions
Salma Hayek Pinault has long been a trailblazing force in Hollywood, not only as an acclaimed actress but as a visionary producer dedicated to amplifying Latin voices and authentic storytelling. In 1998–1999, she founded Ventanarosa Productions (Spanish for “pink window”), a company that has become a beacon for Latino-led narratives in film and television. What began as a bold move to seize creative control has evolved into a powerful platform that continues to shape the industry more than 25 years later.

Ventanarosa’s very first project set a high standard: the 1999 adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s No One Writes to the Colonel (El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba). The film premiered in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival and was Mexico’s official submission for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film. This early success validated Hayek’s vision of bringing literary and cultural depth to the screen.
The company’s breakthrough came with Frida (2002), Hayek’s passion project. She fought for years to produce and star as Frida Kahlo, ultimately earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress—the first for a Mexican woman in that category. The film received six Oscar nominations and won two, cementing Ventanarosa’s reputation for delivering critically acclaimed, culturally rich stories.
Hayek expanded her influence behind the camera. In 2003, she produced and directed The Maldonado Miracle for Showtime, earning a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Children/Youth/Family Special. Ventanarosa also produced acclaimed projects like the adaptation of Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies (2001), the animated feature Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet (Annie Award-nominated), and the groundbreaking series Ugly Betty (2006–2010), which won Emmy, Golden Globe, and Peabody Awards while starring America Ferrera.
The company’s reach has grown through partnerships with major platforms. It produced the Netflix series Monarca (2019), the holiday film El Sabor de la Navidad (TIFF premiere), and more recently boarded the Oscar-shortlisted Mexican drama Tótem (2024) as executive producer. Deals with HBO Max (2020 first-look agreement), Lionsgate, and others have kept Ventanarosa at the forefront of diverse content development.
Collaborating closely with longtime partners like president José “Pepe” Tamez and Head of Development Siobhan Flynn, Hayek has used Ventanarosa to champion women’s stories, immigrant experiences, and Latin American perspectives often overlooked in mainstream Hollywood. Her producer journey reflects the same resilience that defined her acting career—turning barriers into opportunities and building a lasting legacy of empowerment.
Today, as she approaches 60, Salma Hayek continues to evolve Ventanarosa into a dynamic force for inclusive storytelling. From intimate dramas to global hits, the company embodies her belief that authentic voices deserve to be heard. In an industry still fighting for representation, Ventanarosa stands as proof of what passion, persistence, and cultural pride can achieve.
