Field’s path to stardom began on television. After studying at the Actors Studio, she landed the lead in the 1960s sitcom Gidget (1965–1966), followed by the iconic role of Sister Bertrille in The Flying Nun (1967–1970). Though these early roles typecast her as wholesome and bubbly, she fought to break free. Her dramatic breakthrough came with Sybil (1976), a powerful TV miniseries in which she portrayed a woman with multiple personalities, earning her first Emmy Award.

The film world soon took notice. In 1979, she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress as the union organizer in Norma Rae. She took home a second Oscar in 1985 for Places in the Heart, delivering one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in Oscar history: “I haven’t had anybody believe that I could do it.” Other standout films include Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Absence of Malice (1981), Steel Magnolias (1989), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Forrest Gump (1994), and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (2012), for which she earned another Oscar nomination as Mary Todd Lincoln.

Field has also thrived on stage and television, earning Tony nominations and additional Emmys. In 2026, she continues to work with grace and enthusiasm, starring in the Netflix adaptation of the bestselling novel Remarkably Bright Creatures, where she plays a widow who forms an unlikely friendship with an octopus. She recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The View, reflecting on her long career with humor and insight.

Beyond acting, Field is a passionate advocate for women’s rights, equality, and health issues. She has been open about her experiences with osteoporosis and sexual abuse in Hollywood, using her voice to support others. She was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2023, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2019, and the National Medal of Arts.

On a personal level, Field is a proud mother of three sons—Peter, Eli, and Sam—from her marriages to Steven Craig (1968–1975) and Alan Greisman (1984–1994). She cherishes her role as grandmother and maintains close family bonds. Known for embracing her natural gray hair with confidence, she remains a role model for aging with authenticity and strength.

At 80, Sally Field continues to embody resilience, talent, and heartfelt humanity. From flying nun to Oscar-winning powerhouse, her journey inspires anyone who dares to grow beyond expectations.

Happy 80th Birthday, Sally Field! Thank you for the laughter, the tears, the unforgettable characters, and for showing us the power of believing in ourselves. Your light still shines brightly.
