Julia Roberts’ Heartbreaks: Liam Neeson, Matthew Perry, and More
Before finding lasting love with Danny Moder, Julia Roberts experienced several high-profile romances that captured the world’s attention — some passionate, some fleeting, and many ending in public heartbreak. These relationships, often played out under intense media scrutiny, shaped the actress’s journey toward emotional maturity and eventual domestic bliss.

One of her earliest notable romances was with Irish actor Liam Neeson in 1987–1988. Roberts was just 19 and Neeson was 35 when they met on the set of the film Satisfaction. Their relationship, marked by a significant age gap, was intense but short-lived. While neither has spoken extensively about it, it remains one of the most talked-about early chapters in Roberts’ romantic history.
In 1990, Roberts became engaged to Kiefer Sutherland, her co-star in Flatliners. Their whirlwind romance led to a highly anticipated wedding on June 14, 1991. However, just three days before the ceremony, Roberts called it off in one of Hollywood’s most infamous breakups. The “Runaway Bride” headlines followed her for years. Adding to the drama, she was later seen with Sutherland’s friend Jason Patric, sparking rumors of a love triangle.
In 1993, Roberts surprised everyone by marrying country singer Lyle Lovett after a whirlwind courtship. The marriage lasted less than two years, ending in divorce in 1995. Despite the short union, Roberts has always spoken kindly of Lovett.
The mid-1990s brought more fleeting connections. After her guest appearance on Friends in 1996, Roberts briefly dated Matthew Perry. In his memoir, Perry revealed he ended things because he feared she would eventually leave him. Years later, upon Perry’s passing, Roberts expressed genuine sadness, calling his death heartbreaking.
Other rumored or short-lived romances included Dylan McDermott, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Ethan Hawke. Then came her longest pre-Danny relationship with actor Benjamin Bratt (1998–2001). Their nearly four-year romance was stable and loving, with Bratt by her side during her Oscar win for Erin Brockovich. However, differing views on fame, career pace, and future plans eventually led to an amicable split in June 2001.
These heartbreaks, though painful at the time, taught Roberts valuable lessons about love, trust, and self-worth. She has since reflected that all her past relationships, even the difficult ones, helped guide her to the right partner.
In 2002, she married Danny Moder and finally found the stability she had long sought. Today, with over 23 years of marriage and three grown children, Julia Roberts looks back on her earlier heartbreaks as important stepping stones rather than failures.
Her story reminds us that even Hollywood’s brightest stars experience love’s trials — and sometimes, the most beautiful endings come after the hardest chapters.
