Angelina Jolie’s Work for Children
Angelina Jolie has dedicated much of her life to championing children’s rights, protection, and opportunities, particularly for those affected by conflict, displacement, and poverty. As a mother of six children — three adopted from Cambodia, Ethiopia, and Vietnam — her personal experiences have deeply influenced her humanitarian efforts, making children a central focus of her advocacy and philanthropy.

Jolie’s work began gaining momentum after her first adoption. In 2002, she adopted her eldest son, Maddox, from Cambodia while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This experience inspired her to establish the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation (later the Maddox Foundation) in 2003. The foundation supports education, healthcare, and community development in rural Cambodia, including building schools, providing scholarships (such as the Shiloh Scholarship for orphans and vulnerable children), and improving access to clean water and nutrition. It continues to operate as a locally-led initiative focused on sustainable development for Cambodian children.
In 2005, Jolie launched the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, providing free legal aid to asylum-seeking children in the United States. This led to her co-founding Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) in 2008 with Microsoft. KIND has become a leading organization offering pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children facing immigration proceedings, protecting thousands from deportation and exploitation.
Jolie has also been a strong advocate for education in emergencies. She co-chaired the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict and has supported the Education Cannot Wait fund, which delivers quality education to children in crisis zones. Through her UNHCR roles as Goodwill Ambassador and Special Envoy, she visited numerous refugee camps worldwide, highlighting the needs of displaced children and pushing for better protection against child labor, early marriage, and recruitment as soldiers.
Her efforts extend to health and anti-poverty initiatives. She funded the Maddox Chivan Children’s Center in Cambodia for children affected by HIV/AIDS and supported similar centers in Ethiopia. Jolie has also worked with organizations like SOS Children’s Villages to support orphaned and abandoned children globally.
In recent years, Jolie has continued this mission independently. She has advocated for refugee children during the Ukraine crisis and announced plans for a relief village in the Rafah border area to support orphaned children from Gaza, offering shelter, education, and psychological care.
Through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, she has donated millions to children’s causes, combining policy advocacy, direct fieldwork, and storytelling. Her film First They Killed My Father powerfully portrays the impact of war on children.
Angelina Jolie’s work for children goes far beyond celebrity goodwill. It reflects a genuine commitment to giving vulnerable young people safety, education, and hope for the future. By blending personal motherhood with global advocacy, she has helped shape international responses to children’s rights and inspired others to recognize that protecting the youngest generation is essential for building a more just world.
