Jolie’s journey into humanitarian work began in 2001 while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in Cambodia. Deeply moved by the suffering of landmine victims and poverty, she reached out to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Other notable missions include trips to Pakistan for Afghan refugees, Yemen’s forgotten humanitarian crisis, Burkina Faso in the Sahel region, and Myanmar’s internal displacement camps. Jolie often published personal journals from these visits, humanizing the statistics and sharing powerful stories of resilience.

After stepping down as Special Envoy in 2022, Jolie continued her independent humanitarian work. She has visited Ukraine multiple times since the Russian invasion, including in 2025, and made several trips to the Rafah border area in 2025–2026 to support aid efforts for displaced Palestinians. Through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, she has donated millions of dollars to refugee protection, legal aid programs like Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), and emergency relief.

Jolie’s dedication goes beyond symbolic visits. She has addressed the United Nations Security Council, U.S. Congress, and the World Economic Forum, pushing for stronger protection policies, increased funding, and solutions to root causes of displacement.
