In 2008, she co-founded Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) with Microsoft, providing pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied refugee and migrant children in the United States. The organization has helped tens of thousands of vulnerable minors navigate the immigration system.

Her personal life and humanitarian work are deeply intertwined. Her adoptions of Maddox (Cambodia), Zahara (Ethiopia), and Pax (Vietnam) were acts of both love and solidarity with children affected by hardship.
