Angelina Jolie Establishes Her Own Charity Foundation

Angelina Jolie has long been recognized for her profound humanitarian commitment, but one of the most significant steps in her philanthropic journey was the establishment of her own charity foundations. These organizations have allowed her to channel resources directly into causes close to her heart, particularly refugee support, child protection, education, and conservation in regions affected by poverty and conflict.

Jolie’s first major independent initiative came in 2003 with the creation of the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation (originally the Maddox Jolie Foundation). Named after her eldest adopted son from Cambodia, the foundation was inspired by her experiences filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in the country. It focuses on rural development, environmental conservation, healthcare, and education in Cambodia. Over the years, it has supported community projects including health clinics, teacher training, farmer programs, and the protection of more than 60,000 hectares of land. Even after her separation from Brad Pitt, the foundation — now largely operating as the Maddox Foundation — continues its locally-led work in Cambodia, emphasizing sustainable development and poverty alleviation.

In September 2006, Jolie and Brad Pitt established the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, a broader private grantmaking organization dedicated to international humanitarian aid, wildlife conservation, and eradicating extreme rural poverty. The foundation made an immediate impact with major donations, including $1 million to Doctors Without Borders and another $1 million for Darfur relief efforts. It has since supported a wide range of causes, from disaster response to children’s rights and environmental protection.

Through these foundations, Jolie has backed several key initiatives. She co-founded Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) in 2008 with Microsoft to provide legal representation for unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children in the United States. She has also used the foundations to fund education programs for refugees and support survivors of gender-based violence.

In recent years, particularly after stepping down as UNHCR Special Envoy in 2022, Jolie has focused more on direct, locally-led efforts. In 2025, she announced plans to establish a dedicated relief fund and village for orphaned children in Gaza, aiming to provide shelter, education, healthcare, and psychological support to those affected by conflict. This reflects her ongoing desire to create targeted, hands-on solutions beyond traditional institutional frameworks.

Jolie’s approach to her foundations is personal and sustained. She has donated millions of dollars and insists on transparency and effectiveness.
