Angelina Jolie at Refugee Camps in Africa

Angelina Jolie has made numerous visits to refugee camps across Africa throughout her humanitarian career, demonstrating a deep personal commitment to those displaced by conflict, violence, and persecution. Her field missions on the continent, often under harsh and dangerous conditions, have helped shine a global spotlight on forgotten crises and the resilience of African refugees.

Jolie’s engagement with African refugee situations began early. In February 2001, as one of her first major UNHCR missions after being appointed Goodwill Ambassador, she visited Sierra Leone and Tanzania. In Sierra Leone, she witnessed the devastating aftermath of a brutal civil war, meeting amputees and displaced families. In Tanzania, she traveled with separated Congolese children from the border to Lugufu camp, highlighting the plight of unaccompanied minors fleeing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

One of her most notable and repeated focuses has been the Darfur crisis in Sudan. In 2004, she visited West Darfur camps and Tine, a major entry point for refugees. She returned to the region in 2007, traveling through a sandstorm to reach Oure-Cassoni camp in eastern Chad, which housed over 26,000 Sudanese refugees. She expressed concern over deteriorating security and called for stronger international protection and peacekeeping. These visits underscored the severe humanitarian impact on women and children, including widespread sexual violence and lack of basic services.

In 2009, Jolie visited the massive Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, then the world’s largest, sheltering hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees fleeing violence and famine. She met with families and drew attention to overcrowding and inadequate resources.

Jolie also traveled to Namibia, Kenya, and other nations to support UNHCR operations. In more recent years, she marked World Refugee Day in Burkina Faso in 2021, visiting camps hosting people displaced by jihadist violence from Mali and internal conflict. She met internally displaced persons in Kaya and refugees, emphasizing solidarity with the Sahel region’s growing displacement crisis.

Even after stepping down as UNHCR Special Envoy in 2022, Jolie continued independent visits. In September 2024, she traveled to eastern Chad to meet Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Darfur, visiting women’s centers and listening to stories of survival while pledging further support.

During these missions, Jolie has consistently lived under field conditions, met directly with refugees, and used her voice at the UN and in media to advocate for protection, education, and solutions. She has highlighted how African host communities, often among the poorest, generously share limited resources with refugees.

Angelina Jolie’s presence at African refugee camps has not only raised awareness and funds but also humanized complex crises. Her sustained engagement across more than two decades reflects genuine compassion and a belief that every displaced person deserves dignity and hope. In a continent bearing a significant share of global forced displacement, her work continues to remind the world of the urgent need for solidarity and action.
