Angelina Jolie and Her Efforts Against Gender-Based Violence
Angelina Jolie has emerged as one of the world’s most influential voices against gender-based violence (GBV), particularly sexual violence in conflict zones. Leveraging her fame as an Academy Award-winning actress, she has channeled her platform into concrete action, advocacy, and survivor support for more than two decades. Her work emphasizes ending impunity, reducing stigma, and providing justice for victims of rape and other forms of violence used as weapons of war.

Jolie’s commitment deepened during her early humanitarian missions with the UNHCR. Witnessing the widespread use of sexual violence in places like Sierra Leone, Bosnia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo profoundly affected her. In 2011, she directed In the Land of Blood and Honey, a film exploring the horrors of wartime rape in Bosnia. The project inspired her to take bolder steps. In May 2012, she co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) with then-UK Foreign Secretary William Hague. The initiative aims to shatter the culture of impunity surrounding conflict-related sexual violence by improving accountability, supporting survivors, and changing international responses.
A landmark moment came in June 2014 when Jolie and Hague co-chaired the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London. The largest gathering of its kind, it brought together governments, NGOs, and survivors to adopt practical measures. At the summit, Jolie delivered a powerful speech declaring that the shame belongs to the perpetrators, not the victims. The event resulted in new international protocols for documenting sexual violence and commitments from dozens of countries.
Jolie has visited numerous conflict zones to meet survivors directly, including Rwanda, Bosnia, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. She has consistently highlighted how sexual violence destroys communities, traumatizes generations, and hinders peacebuilding. In speeches before the UN Security Council and other global forums, she has urged leaders to treat these crimes with the same seriousness as other war crimes, calling for better funding, legal reforms, and survivor-centered approaches.
Beyond conflict zones, Jolie has addressed domestic and broader gender-based violence. In 2022, she supported the reauthorization of the U.S. Violence Against Women Act. She has spoken about the need to tackle structural causes of inequality and has used her personal experiences, including her preventive double mastectomy, to promote women’s health autonomy and awareness.
Through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, she has provided financial support for legal aid, psychosocial services, and education programs that empower women and girls. Even after stepping down as UNHCR Special Envoy in 2022, she continues advocating, criticizing governments for slow progress and insufficient support for survivors.
Angelina Jolie’s efforts have helped shift global conversations, raised millions in funding, and trained thousands of professionals in survivor-sensitive investigations. While challenges remain — including persistent impunity and underfunding — her work demonstrates that high-profile advocacy can drive policy changes and offer hope to millions affected by gender-based violence.
In a world where women and girls continue to bear the brunt of conflict and inequality, Jolie stands as a relentless champion, proving that empathy combined with action can challenge even the darkest aspects of human behavior.
