A stunned Manhattan federal courthouse froze as Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorney Arthur Aidala stood defiant on June 25, 2024, declaring his client “vilified and pilloried” more than any defendant in history after a three-judge appeals panel upheld her 20-year sentence for trafficking underage girls to Jeffrey Epstein.
The Second Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected Maxwell’s challenge to her 2022 conviction on five counts, including sex trafficking of minors. Aidala, voice steady yet edged with fury outside the Thurgood Marshall Courthouse, told reporters: “No defendant has been vilified and pilloried like this—pre-trial, trial, post-trial. The media convicted her before evidence.” He vowed Supreme Court appeal, arguing juror misconduct and prosecutorial overreach.
Maxwell, 62, watched via video from FCI Tallahassee, her expression unreadable. The ruling affirmed her role as Epstein’s chief recruiter and enabler—grooming girls as young as 14 for abuse from 1994–2004—despite her claims of being a scapegoat.
Survivors erupted in relief. Annie Farmer called it “justice holding”: “She groomed us, normalized horror. No more appeals delay accountability.” Virginia Giuffre’s memoir Nobody’s Girl (October 21, 2025) echoed the pain, detailing Maxwell’s cruelty.
Aidala’s defiance—raw, unyielding—contrasted courtroom hush: Maxwell’s fall final, no higher court likely to intervene. As Epstein’s shadow lingered amid 2025 file disclosures (deadline December 19), the upheld sentence ensured one enabler faced reckoning—vilification, survivors countered, earned.
