He counted down the days to Christmas with excitement, dreaming of lights, presents, and childhood joy. Yet for Jace Watkins, an 11-year-old fifth grader from Hueytown, Alabama, the holiday season turned into unimaginable tragedy.

Just last week, Jace was a healthy, happy boy—full of life and anticipation. Then the flu struck suddenly. Symptoms began on December 18, 2025. By December 20, he suffered a seizure and stopped breathing, requiring emergency resuscitation. He was rushed to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, placed in a medically induced coma on a ventilator as doctors fought swelling in his brain and other complications.

His family and community rallied with prayer vigils, holding onto hope for a Christmas miracle. Jace had no major underlying conditions, making the rapid decline even more devastating.

Tragically, on December 27, 2025, Jace passed away, just days after Christmas. He never got to open his presents. His aunt, Sabrina Parsons, shared the heartbreaking news on social media: “Jace never even got to open his Christmas gifts… This will forever weigh over our family.”

Hueytown Intermediate School principal Cari McClellan posted: “Our hearts are broken… Jace was a bright light to everyone who knew him. His sweet genuine smile will be missed by all.”

The community mourned deeply, with vigils and support pouring in. A GoFundMe, originally for medical bills, now aids funeral expenses and has raised thousands.

Jace’s story highlights the flu’s dangers, even in healthy children. Alabama saw rising cases during the holidays, reminding families to vaccinate and monitor symptoms.

Our thoughts are with Jace’s family, friends, and community. Though his light dimmed too soon, his memory—as a joyful boy full of promise—will live on.

Rest in peace, Jace. The world shares your family’s grief this holiday season.
