A recently unsealed email from July 7, 2019—one day after Jeffrey Epstein’s dramatic arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges—has shed new light on the intensity of the early investigation. The email, released as part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing disclosure of Epstein-related files in December 2025, shows an FBI official in New York urgently requesting an update on efforts to contact “the 10 CO conspirators.”
The message, with the subject line “co-conspirators,” reads: “When you get a chance can you give me an update on the status of the 10 CO conspirators?” Follow-up exchanges detail progress in locating and serving grand jury subpoenas to several individuals. By July 9, agents reported that six had been served: three in Florida, one in Boston, one in New York City, and one in Connecticut. Four remained outstanding, including a “wealthy businessman in Ohio” and three others described as “out of pocket.”

Most names in the emails are heavily redacted, but three are visible: Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate later convicted of sex trafficking; Jean-Luc Brunel, a French modeling agent accused of procuring girls for Epstein who died in jail in 2022; and Leslie Wexner, the billionaire founder of Victoria’s Secret. Wexner’s representatives have stated he fully cooperated, provided background information, and was informed he was neither a target nor co-conspirator.
The revelation underscores how federal agents moved swiftly post-arrest to build a broader case, potentially targeting a superseding indictment. However, Epstein’s suicide in August 2019 halted momentum, and only Maxwell has faced charges among alleged accomplices.
Victims’ advocates and bipartisan lawmakers have expressed outrage over the redactions, questioning why more names and details remain hidden years later. Critics argue the opacity fuels speculation and denies full accountability in one of the most high-profile sex-trafficking scandals.
As additional files—including over a million newly discovered documents—undergo review, pressure mounts for complete transparency.
