In a bold move escalating the Trump administration’s crackdown on left-wing activism, Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed the FBI to aggressively pursue investigations into antifa and affiliated extremist groups accused of fueling domestic terrorism through violence and radical ideologies. The directive, issued in early December 2025, prioritizes Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs) to target activities linked to antifa, including alleged involvement in riots, vandalism, and online radicalization.
Bondi’s memo, part of a sweeping new domestic terrorism strategy, labels antifa—a decentralized, leaderless anti-fascist movement—as a primary threat. It accuses the network of orchestrating “acts of domestic terrorism” such as doxing, property destruction, and incitement to violence, potentially chilling free speech according to critics. The order also instructs law enforcement to probe tax crimes and funding sources for groups aligned with antifa, aiming to dismantle what the DOJ calls “violent extremist networks.”
A leaked version of the memo reveals plans to compile lists of organizations based on political views related to immigration, gender, and U.S. policy, raising alarms about targeting anti-Trump activists. Bondi defended the initiative, stating it addresses “horrific threats” disrupted by the FBI, including vandalism labeled as terrorism.
Civil liberties groups, including the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), warn that the program risks violating First Amendment protections by conflating protest with terrorism. Bipartisan concerns have emerged, with some Democrats calling it a politicized witch hunt, while Republicans praise it as necessary for public safety.
