Forensic experts have exposed significant failures in the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 jail cell death, analyzing newly scrutinized photos that reveal his cell in complete disarray—rifled through, with items moved and no proper evidence markers—undermining claims of a rigorous suicide probe.

In an October 2025 CBS News report, experts reviewed 90 previously obtained photos of the Metropolitan Correctional Center cell where Epstein was found hanged on August 10, 2019. The images depict a chaotic scene: scattered orange bedsheets, medications lined up haphazardly, and belongings disturbed. Critically, Epstein’s body had been removed hours earlier, before FBI agents arrived at 1:35 p.m.—over seven hours after discovery—depriving investigators of vital contextual evidence.
Forensic pathologist Michael Baden, who observed the autopsy, emphasized that the body should have remained in place for proper crime scene processing. “This was a critical source of information lost,” he noted. Other analysts, including Nick Barreiro, criticized the lack of standard protocols: no evidence placards, apparent movement of items, and failure to run basic tests or interview witnesses promptly.
The photos show inconsistencies, such as multiple nooses on the floor and questions over which ligature was used. Experts described the scene as “rifled-through clutter,” suggesting contamination before professional processing. The FBI reportedly had advanced tools but “used none of it,” Barreiro said.
The Justice Department’s 2023 Inspector General report confirmed suicide amid negligence but found no foul play. Yet these revelations, amplified by recent surveillance footage scrutiny, fuel doubts. Mark Epstein continues calling for a homicide investigation.
As Epstein file releases proceed, these forensic critiques shatter assurances of a thorough probe, highlighting systemic lapses in handling one of America’s most scrutinized deaths.
