Prominent British conservative columnist Peter Hitchens has issued a stark warning about President Donald Trump’s ambitions, predicting that the U.S. leader will “try quite hard” to secure an unprecedented third term in the White House.

In a November 10, 2025, Daily Mail video and article, Hitchens revealed he had bet an old friend that Trump would aggressively pursue this goal. “I’ve just bet a very old friend that President Trump will try quite hard to have a third term in the White House,” Hitchens stated. “I think it’s worth worrying about.”
The warning comes amid Trump’s second non-consecutive term, following his 2024 victory. The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment explicitly limits presidents to two elected terms, a rule ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms. Yet Hitchens suggests Trump, known for his love of power and boundary-pushing, may seek ways around it—possibly through constitutional challenges, political pressure, or unconventional maneuvers.
Hitchens, a longtime Mail on Sunday columnist often critical of Trump despite sharing some conservative views, argues the possibility should be taken seriously. He teases that the Constitution might not be as ironclad as assumed in certain scenarios, though experts maintain the amendment is clear: no person shall be elected president more than twice.
Trump has occasionally joked about or floated third-term ideas in the past, and merchandise like “Trump 2028” hats has fueled speculation. Allies like Steve Bannon have openly discussed it, while critics see it as a threat to democratic norms.
Hitchens’ prediction aligns with his broader concerns about Trump’s disruptive style and potential to erode institutions. As the president enjoys strong Republican control of Congress, any push could test America’s constitutional safeguards.
This warning highlights growing transatlantic unease over Trump’s long-term influence, reminding observers that term limits exist for a reason—to prevent perpetual power.
