In 2005, a terrified 16-year-old Epstein victim—identified only as Jane Doe in newly unsealed files—mustered every ounce of courage to dial the FBI tip line, tearfully detailing how the billionaire financier was running a massive sex-trafficking operation with underage girls flown across state lines. In a tragic revelation confirmed by newly unsealed documents in December 2025, Epstein survivor Maria Farmer courageously reported Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes to the FBI in 1996—only for the agent to allegedly hang up mid-sentence, allowing the sex trafficking ring to operate unchecked for decades.

Farmer, an artist who worked for Epstein, first encountered his predatory behavior in the mid-1990s. She alleges Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell sexually assaulted her at Leslie Wexner’s Ohio estate. After escaping, Farmer reported stolen nude photos of her underage sisters (aged 12 and 16), child pornography in Epstein’s possession, and ongoing abuse of minors.

On August 26, 1996, she contacted the NYPD, then the FBI. According to Farmer’s 2025 lawsuit against the government and multiple interviews, as she detailed the sex trafficking ring and assaults, the FBI agent abruptly hung up without follow-up.

A September 3, 1996, FBI report—released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act—corroborates her complaint, noting Epstein stole photos for potential sale, requested images of young girls, and threatened to burn her house. Despite this early warning, no investigation followed. Epstein continued abusing hundreds of girls until his 2008 plea deal and 2019 arrest.

Farmer, vindicated after 30 years, told The New York Times: “They can’t call me a liar anymore.” Yet she wept for victims harmed by the inaction: “The FBI failed us.” Her lawyer stated proper investigation could have spared over 1,000 victims.

Critics, including bipartisan lawmakers, decry the FBI’s negligence. Farmer’s story highlights systemic failures enabling powerful predators, fueling demands for accountability as more files emerge.
