Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, stood outside the Manhattan federal courthouse on December 9, 2025, his voice rising with indignation as he declared his client had been “vilified and pilloried” more than any defendant in American history. The dramatic statement came minutes after U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer ordered the unsealing of Maxwell’s grand jury materials under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a ruling Aidala branded “a grotesque miscarriage of justice.”

Flanked by co-counsel David Markus, Aidala told reporters Maxwell was being scapegoated for Epstein’s crimes while “the real predators—the men who paid, flew, and preyed—walk free.” He claimed the government leaks and media coverage had “poisoned the well,” making a fair retrial impossible and prejudicing her pending habeas petition. “They’ve turned Ghislaine into the face of evil so the world won’t look at the actual faces,” he said, gesturing toward the courthouse steps.

Aidala’s remarks immediately ignited backlash. Victims’ attorney Spencer Kuvin called them “disgusting revisionism,” reminding reporters Maxwell was convicted on five of six counts for recruiting and grooming minors. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), who pushed the Transparency Act, tweeted: “The only person vilifying Ghislaine Maxwell is Ghislaine Maxwell—on video, in court, and in her own words.”

Inside the courthouse, Maxwell herself remained silent, but her legal team filed an emergency motion to stay the unsealing, arguing it would “irreparably taint” any future proceedings. Judge Engelmayer rejected the stay that afternoon, ordering release by December 19.

Aidala’s courthouse outburst, broadcast live on every major network, became instant fodder for late-night hosts and X memes, with #PoorGhislaine trending ironically alongside #SurvivorsFirst. Yet for many watching, the attorney’s indignation only underscored the surreal inversion at the heart of the case: the woman convicted of trafficking children now cast, by her own defense, as history’s greatest victim of unfair treatment.
