After vanishing into seclusion amid Epstein’s darkest shadows, Ghislaine Maxwell finally faced the dawn raid that ended her year-long evasion in a remote New Hampshire hideaway.
For nearly a year following Jeffrey Epstein’s arrest and subsequent suicide in 2019, Maxwell, his longtime associate and former girlfriend, disappeared from public view. Accusations had long swirled that she played a pivotal role in recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein’s sexual exploitation, allegations she vehemently denied.
In December 2019, Maxwell quietly purchased a sprawling 156-acre property in Bradford, New Hampshire, through an anonymized LLC for cash. Aptly named “Tucked Away,” the secluded estate became her fortress, guarded by former British military personnel. She changed phone numbers, email addresses, and lived under layers of secrecy, evading detection while authorities discreetly tracked her movements using mobile data.
On the morning of July 2, 2020, FBI agents executed a dramatic dawn raid. Breaking through the locked gate, they announced themselves at the door. Prosecutors later revealed Maxwell attempted to flee to another room, ignoring commands to open up. She was arrested without further incident, ending her fugitive status.
Charged with enticement of minors and sex trafficking, Maxwell’s trial in 2021 exposed harrowing testimonies from victims who described her as a “normalizer” of abuse—befriending young girls, discussing sex openly, and facilitating encounters with Epstein from the 1990s to early 2000s.
Convicted on five counts, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022. As of 2026, Maxwell continues serving her sentence, with recent appeals rejected and new filings claiming unfair trial proceedings amid ongoing Epstein file releases.
