A stunned world froze as investigative journalist Vicky Ward peeled back the veil on Jeffrey Epstein’s mysterious rise to riches, her voice laced with disbelief: “No one really knows how he made his money—it’s the great unsolved puzzle.”

Ward, who first profiled Epstein for Vanity Fair in 2003 (a piece famously softened under pressure from Epstein’s lawyers), revisited the enigma in a December 15, 2025, BBC Radio 4 interview amid the Epstein Files Transparency Act’s disclosures. “He started as a college dropout teaching at Dalton School,” she said, tone edged with incredulity. “Then suddenly he’s managing billions for Les Wexner—no clients listed, no track record. It’s the great unsolved puzzle.”

Epstein’s wealth—estimated $500 million+ at death—remains opaque. He joined Bear Stearns in 1976, left in 1981 to found J. Epstein & Co., claiming to manage assets only for billionaires. Wexner gave him power of attorney in 1991, but no public filings explain the fortune’s source. Theories range from financial wizardry to blackmail leverage or hidden services for elites.

Ward’s 2003 article alleged Epstein boasted of “owning” people; editors removed victim claims under legal threats. The 2025 file releases—emails, logs, photos—offer no definitive answer, only more questions. “The money trail stops at shadows,” Ward concluded.

Giuffre’s Nobody’s Girl (October 21, 2025) calls Epstein’s riches “blood money” from trafficking. As December 19 disclosures loom, Ward’s disbelief echoes a nation’s: the puzzle unsolved, the veil half-lifted.
