Bombshell NYT Exposé: Jeffrey Epstein’s $600 Million Fortune Built on Scams, Theft, and Deception
In a stunning investigation published in December 2025, The New York Times has demolished the myth of Jeffrey Epstein as a financial genius, revealing that his estimated $600 million fortune at death was amassed through a lifetime of “scams, schemes, ruthless cons,” and outright theft—not sophisticated investing or billionaire-level acumen.

The probe, titled “Scams, Schemes, Ruthless Cons: The Untold Story of How Jeffrey Epstein Got Rich,” draws on interviews with dozens of former colleagues, partners, and victims, plus unpublished records, diaries, and financial documents. Reporters found Epstein, a college dropout, began his ascent with early frauds: scamming a video-game executive and “recovering” hidden funds in dubious bounty-hunter schemes that netted him millions.
By the 1980s and 1990s, Epstein exploited elite connections, falsely claiming ties to figures like David Rockefeller and manipulating stock prices. His biggest windfall came from billionaire Les Wexner, founder of Victoria’s Secret, who granted Epstein power of attorney over his finances—despite warnings from advisors. Epstein allegedly siphoned tens of millions from Wexner through misappropriation, while charging exorbitant fees for questionable tax and estate advice.
Later, after Wexner cut ties around 2007, Epstein turned to Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black, extracting over $150 million in payments for similar services. The Times emphasizes these were not earned through brilliance but via charm, lies, and exploitation—often walking away with impunity from failed or fraudulent deals.
Critically, the investigation debunks wilder theories like foreign intelligence operations, finding a “more prosaic” explanation: relentless grifting that fooled sophisticated marks. Epstein’s wealth funded his lavish lifestyle and enabled decades of abuse, shielded by perceived legitimacy.
This revelation has reignited global outrage, underscoring how unchecked deception in elite circles allowed Epstein’s crimes to persist. As more files emerge, the full scope of his cons may yet expand.
