A stunned Tucson community erupted in outrage on December 5, 2025, as newly sworn-in Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) claimed she was pepper-sprayed in the face by masked ICE agents during a chaotic raid on a beloved local taco restaurant chain, Taco Giro.
Grijalva, the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress and daughter of the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, posted a video on X recounting the incident: “When I presented myself as a Member of Congress asking for more information, I was pushed aside and pepper sprayed.” She described arriving at the Grande Avenue location—a “small mom-and-pop restaurant” she visits weekly—amid reports of federal agents detaining workers. Protesters had gathered, blocking vehicles, when agents allegedly deployed pepper spray, smoke grenades, and pepper balls into the crowd, hitting Grijalva, her staff, journalists, and bystanders.
The Department of Homeland Security denied Grijalva was targeted, stating she was “in the vicinity” of someone obstructing officers, and two agents were injured. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz condemned the “disproportionate” force in a historic Latino neighborhood, while Grijalva called ICE “lawless” under the Trump administration.
The raid, part of a years-long probe into immigration and tax violations, resulted in 46 arrests across southern Arizona Taco Giro locations. Grijalva, sworn in November 12 after a 50-day delay, linked the incident to broader fears in immigrant communities. Public reaction split: supporters rallied with #StandWithAdelita, while critics questioned her presence at the protest.
